Ah, it’s February in the Sonoran Desert. Winter begins to settle in, lay low and loosen it’s grip. While one may awake to a frigid, 26 degree morning, don’t be shocked if by the afternoon it’s 75F and sunny, boasting warm, refreshing breezes, the emergence of desert life and you’re certainly no dawdler in removing your flannel or jacket. For even if Punxsutawney Phil sees his shadow, the Sonoran almost always delivers those iconic desert glory days  where the tempting thoughts of spring are authentic and valid. May we not fret the occasional winter storm as it arises but rather welcome it with jolly supposition. For if the rains are generous, desert wildflowers and annual blooms may begin their winsome display this month! As we continue to welcome migrating birds, our Coastas and Annas work to establish breeding territories within our own backyards. We find ourselves amidst a popular time for hiking, bird watching, trail running, outdoor festivals and cultural celebrations during the day while witnessing the clearest, most dazzling Arizona skies by night. A full moon enters the sky on February 12 making the beginning and end of the month the most popular time for star gazing and expanded views of the Milkway. Love isn’t just in the air on the 14 but much of this month as great horned owls may be heard tenderly conversing their way into their breeding season. February is an amazing month in the Sonoran Desert, packed with engaging opportunity and fascinating nature events. Lets take a look at some things to watch for.
